Steve Youngs claim to fame on the gridiron include these honors:
- The highest rated quarterback in National Football League history
- Super Bowl XXIX MVP
- The NFLs MVP in 92 and 94
- The only quarterback in NFL history to have won four consecutive passing titles
- The only quarterback in history to post four consecutive seasons with a quarterback rating of above 100
- Selected to participate in the Pro Bowl six consecutive years
As brilliant as Young was on the field, how he conducted himself off the field is just as memorable. All through his career, he has given his time, his money and his presence to any number of charities and causes, and in victory or defeat, was among the most gracious people in sports. What set Young apart from the rest of his peers was not just his intelligence, his arm or his passing efficiency, but how he brought dignity and honor to sports something often lacking in the age of the modern athlete.
Young, a direct descendent of the second President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Brigham Young, says hes motivated by his strong belief in God, family and old-fashioned hard work, ideals he continues to pass on to the youth of today. His Forever Young Foundation benefits youth charities in Utah and California. He also raises funds for the Americans Indian Service. He says, The students become isolated on the reservations and I want them to feel theres a reason to get educated and a reason to try.
For these reasons, Young will find his way to Boise, Idaho in April to be inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame. He will join sports greats David Robinson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Arthur Ashe and Mary Lou Retton who have previously been honored.
The Harlem Globetrotters were previously announced as part of the Class of 2003. A combination of legends and current players will be in attendance to receive the accolades for the many years the Globetrotters have traveled the world bringing joy to the faces of both young and old.
The 2003 Induction Ceremony is scheduled for April 30 and will be held in the Boise Centre on the Grove. For sponsorship and ticket information, please call the Hall of Fame at (208) 343-7224.
